What is SWOS?
Sensible Soccer is a
popular football game from the nineties. Sensible World Of Soccer is an enhanced
sequel featuring a career/manager mode and hundreds upon hundreds of real teams.
Many still play SWOS in preference to newer games, unable to shake their
addiction.
Why are there
data updates?
The last official version of SWOS was released for the 1996-97 football
season. This data is now out of date and some people prefer to play with
up-to-date team and player data. Some amazing people have written data editors
so that this was possible.
How do I use
these updates?
This involves simply replacing your existing SWOS Data folder with the new
one. For users of the Amiga game this can be slightly trickier, and adfview
may be useful for some configurations. To help with this process, there is a readme file included with
each update.
Crashes in
career mode?
If the data for an update does not use the same league structure (i.e. the same
number of teams per league) as the version of SWOS you are using, the game will
crash in career mode, since the game does not find the data it is expecting to
find. Most of these updates are designed to be used with the 96-97 version of
SWOS. Some updates use modified league structures in order to fit with real life
at the time, and these require use of a modified version of the game file (SWOS2
in the case of the Amiga version, sws.exe in the case of the PC version) in
order to work properly; these files are provided in the downloads where
necessary, along with brief instructions for their use.
Transfer market
issue in career mode?
The international transfer market in SWOS is controlled by different files to
the team.xxx files themselves. These files are also in the Data folder. If these
files aren't updated when you update your data files, you may have problems
buying players from abroad, since the data will not match. This is fixed using
the 'fix foreign market' function in Pablo Fridlender's PC
SWOS Editor before you start your career. In order to do this your data
files must be PC versions. You can 'pack' (for Amiga use) and 'unpack' (for PC
use) the team files using ProPack.
This is nothing to worry about - if you replace your entire Data folder with the
Synchronated Data folder, this process has already been done for you and you
should not encounter any problems.
Why are some
players' shirt numbers incorrect?
The Amiga (and some elements of the PC version too) only likes shirt numbers
1-16, with 1-11 in the first team and 12-16 on the bench, so the updates have to
fit those rather than realistic modern squad numbers.
Can I make my
own changes and updates?
Yes. Pablo Fridlender's
and Whiteulver's editors
are excellent and both have different, useful features. Remember they can only
edit data (team.xxx) files which are PC versions (or 'unpacked'
for PC use). The most important thing many miss when starting out is to do with
player skill attribute: they range from 0-15 but this is *not* a linear scale.
0-7 is the same as 8-15, with 0 and 8 being 'very poor' and 7 and 15 being
'world class'.
Where do the
player prices and skills come from?
A lot of the prices are subjective and most are derived from the player
values at transfermarkt.de. Values
are adjusted to keep the game balanced and the players' skills use the original
SWOS formulae.
Why is my club
in the wrong division/why are there only 18 teams in Serie A?
Some league structures have changed since SWOS was released. This means that in
some updates, some teams (for example two of
the 20 current Serie A teams) had to be moved to other divisions (in this case
Serie B) in order to get the game to work fully and properly for everybody. All
the teams are still present in the data file where possible, so this is easily
'fixed' to the current league structure in SWOES if you
prefer. In some of the updates this process has already been done and, by
playing the game with the modified game files provided, you can play with modern
league structures and no career mode crashes.
I am having
trouble getting SWOS to run/using these updates/I have a
different question...
